Vision, Image, and Signal Processing

Home

The Vision, Image and Signal Processing (VISP) group has an extensive breadth and depth of current research: from physical simulation of the source of signals, through imaging and sensing techniques to the development of algorithms and their applications to real-world problems.

Fundamental work, funded primarily by the Research Councils, includes the study of non-linear processes, imaging science and new sensor development, probabilistically constrained estimation theory in several dimensions, coding, communication and information theory.

Through direct industrial and collaborative programme funding, applied research spans underwater systems, telecommunications, the leisure industries, avionics, surveillance, medical imaging, and robotics. An example is the integration of sensors into autonomous underwater systems and their mission planning.

The group are members of the Joint Research Institute in Signal and Image Processing, formed between the Universities of Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh in 2005 as part of the Scottish Research pooling Initiative. Current funding comes from a wide variety of European Union, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Government, and Industry awards.
