The Department of Electrical, Electronic & Computer Engineering offers a unique environment for teaching and research within Scotland, located in the heart of the university's attractive campus in the capital city of Edinburgh. The department is well equipped with modern electrical, electronic and computing hardware and software, and has a number of specialist facilities associated with research activities in microengineering, computer vision and image processing, underwater navigation systems, and electrical power and drives. The University itself has an excellent social and sporting life, and is easily reached by air, train, and road transport.

The research activities cover a broad spectrum across the disciplines of Computer Engineering and Electronic Engineering, supported by a wide range of funding bodies including EPSRC, the European Community, UK Government and Industrial sources. Maintenance of excellence of research is a key objective, not only for its own sake, but because of the impact it has on core business of student education. Our two disciplines cover a wide spectrum of theoretical and applied research, from microengineering to ocean systems, with highvoltage engineering, intelligent and visual systems in between. As befits a modern technological department, we are always conscious of the necessity to apply the results of our work to real problems. We have strong collaborative programmes links with a large number of UK and overseas industrial companies which are mutually beneficial.

Our degrees are well-respected by employers, as we have one of the highest employment rates for graduates in the UK. The majority of our course are accredited by either the Institute of Electrical Engineers, leading to Membership of the professional body in due course. Supervised research can be undertaken on a full or a part-time basis, leading to a PhD or MPhil qualification. In addition, there is a programme of short courses, some offered on a regular basis and others tailored in response to specific industrial needs.
